About Our Organization
Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest mentoring organization in the country with over 350 agencies nationwide. Big Brothers Big Sisters was founded in 1904 by Earnest Coulter in Philadelphia in response to seeing a boy, digging through a garbage can in his back alley behind his law firm. For over 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been the leader in mentoring -- serving children who need a positive role model in their lives, largely due to the death of parent, divorce, or abandonment.
Locally, we were founded as a program of the YMCA in 1987. We worked hard for the next couple of years with the YMCA to become an independent organization. On December 31, 1995 we moved to our first office space in Decatur, IL. Over the next year, we expanded to McLean County, then in the next few years on to DeWitt, Champaign, Piatt, Ford, & Livingston, -- 7 counties.
